UW Announces New AI Girlfriend Platform for CS Students

Shortly after announcing its groundbreaking AI platform Purple – short for Purple Nurple – the University of Washington has since announced an additional add-on to promote socializing, wellbeing, and the mental fortitude of computer science students: AI girlfriends in the beloved art style of soft-power anime.  

After conducting a study on the positive impacts of AI companions on young developing minds, generously co-sponsored by OpenAI and Boeing, the UW has found “good enough” evidence to justify the implementation of this new program. 

“Over the years, we’ve seen a drastic decline in the mental wellbeing of computer science and engineering students,” President Robert J. Jones said. “This is detrimental to the university as it hurts recruitment levels with our university partners, and ultimately impacts our bottom line.”

Reevaluating course curriculums, student workloads, and faculty priorities can cost the university buttloads of money, whereas the AI girlfriend program will be conveniently covered for by all students in a new $250 health and wellbeing fee. 

In addition to being more cost effective than long-term strategies, the initiative works to strengthen the university’s partnership with OpenAI, as both Purple and AI Girlfriends are essentially OpenAI wrappers with a UW trademark slapped on top of it. 

“My therapist told me that I should try to socialize with someone at least once a week,” a CS student told Off Leash. “Now my therapist will be really proud of me – I’m socializing 24/7 with my digital metamour Miku!”

While the program is currently only available for CS majors, UW plans to roll it out to every student once the testing, or rather beta, period is over. The AI girlfriends are trained to encourage productivity and limit unnecessary distractions such as human-to-human socializing. While the selection is still very limited, one very popular AI girlfriend students can choose from is Harriet the Husky, for students who dabble in that furry shit.
